Fairy Meadows

History of Fairy Medows

Fairy Meadows, located in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, is a breathtaking alpine destination at the base of Nanga Parbat (8,126 meters), the world’s ninth-highest mountain. The name “Fairy Meadows” was given by German climbers who were enchanted by its lush green meadows, calling it a place where fairies might reside. Locally, it is known as “Joot” in the native language. Historically, Fairy Meadows has been an important campsite for mountaineers attempting to summit Nanga Parbat, which is also known as the “Killer Mountain” due to its treacherous climbing history. The area is inhabited by the Shepherd community, who have lived in the region for generations, relying on livestock, tourism, and seasonal farming.
